Carmel Valley's Trusted Pool Pro, Since 2005

I started servicing swimming pools and spas in San Diego in 2005, and Carmel Valley has been the heart of my service area ever since. My specialty is fine-tuning your pool so that it looks its best all week long.

Many pool service companies hire part-time employees and have to continually train new people as their old employees move on. Often these employees don't have a long-term interest in the pool service industry and don't make a commitment to learning.

You should know who is in your backyard each week. With Penguin Pool Service, you always will — it's me, every time.

What to Expect from Your Weekly Service

Transparency matters. Here's exactly what's included in every visit and how we handle billing, scheduling, and the occasional curveball from Mother Nature.

Every Weekly Visit

  • Test and balance water chemistry
  • Net pool surface
  • Clean skimmer and pump baskets
  • Add chlorine and acid as needed

As Conditions Require

  • Clean waterline tile
  • Vacuum pool floor
  • Backwash filter
  • Brush pool sides (if algae growth is present)

Additional Services & Pricing

Billed separately as needed:

Filter cleaning (includes Fiber Clear media and phosphate treatment) $95 per cleaning
Water conditioner treatment $30 /year
Salt (per 40 lb bag, as needed) $12 per bag
Salt cell cleaning $35 per cleaning

Filter cleaning is performed up to twice per year as needed. Water conditioner is billed each April.

Service Schedule

Service is provided 48 weeks per year. I take four weeks for vacation and occasional sick time, broken up as follows:

  • Western Pool & Spa Show (spring)
  • Thanksgiving week
  • Christmas week
  • 4th week used for sick time as needed

You'll know well in advance when I'll be out, so there are never surprises.

Weather & Special Conditions

Rainy or windy days: I still come. Vacuuming may be skipped if poor visibility makes it impractical — but chemistry, skimmer cleaning, and all other tasks are completed.

Santa Ana conditions: Heavy debris loads during Santa Ana wind events can take 2–3 weeks to fully resolve, even with extra attention.

Owner Responsibilities

Water level: Please maintain a proper water level between visits. Low water can damage the pump.

Bubble covers: Remove solar/bubble covers before your service day so I can access the water surface.

Gate access: Please ensure I can access the pool area each week. If I can't get in, a makeup visit is not guaranteed — consistent access keeps your service on track.

Understanding Phosphates in Your Pool

Proactive phosphate management is one of the most effective ways to keep your pool algae-free year-round.

What Are Phosphates?

Phosphates are a type of nutrient necessary for the growth of algae. During the 1960s and '70s, America had a serious problem with eutrophication of its lakes and streams — many were becoming clogged with algae. Extensive studies found that elevated phosphate levels in water allowed excessive algae growth. The key finding: algae growth is directly limited by the amount of phosphates present in the water.

Algae blows into your swimming pool as spores in the wind. While chlorine will often prevent algae from blooming, it doesn't always work — and 60% of swimming pools typically experience strong algae growth at least twice each year. Treating a bloom requires very high levels of chlorine and algaecides. The dead algae then collect in the pool filter, reducing water flow and requiring the filter to be cleaned.

The smarter approach: remove phosphates before algae can use them. Preventing a bloom is far less disruptive — and less expensive — than treating one after it occurs.

How Phosphates Enter Your Pool

Phosphates enter the pool through fill water, decaying plant matter, poorly-spread fertilizers, dust, dirt, rain water, and some common pool chemicals. Each pool is different, but it is normal to acquire approximately 200 parts per billion (ppb) of phosphates over the course of a year. If not removed regularly, they accumulate until algae can take hold.

How We Remove Them

Removing phosphates requires adding a phosphate remover formulated with lanthanum. Lanthanum bonds with the phosphate in the water to form lanthanum phosphate — a compound that lasts 7–10 days and forms particles large enough to be trapped in the pool filter. About a week after treatment, the filter is cleaned, removing both the lanthanum and the phosphates together.

This process may cause some temporary cloudiness before the water clears through filtration, but it is completely safe for swimming throughout.

Our Proactive Approach

Penguin Pool Service tests each pool for phosphate levels every spring — after most of the winter storms have passed. Regular phosphate management helps your pool avoid algae blooms and the harsh chemicals required to treat them. It's one of the most cost-effective things we do to keep your water consistently clear.
